Springtrap is a central antagonist in the Five Nights at Freddy's game series. His first appearance was in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2015).
Within the game's lore, Springtrap is the decayed and heavily damaged animatronic form of William Afton. Afton, a serial killer responsible for the deaths of numerous children at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, used the Spring Bonnie animatronic suit to lure his victims.
After the restaurant closed, Afton returned to destroy the animatronics, believing he could release their spirits. However, the spirits retaliated, cornering him. In a desperate attempt to hide, he entered the old Spring Bonnie suit. Due to faulty springlocks and moisture within the suit, the mechanisms failed, crushing and killing him. He became trapped inside, reanimating as the vengeful and decaying Springtrap.
